“Tarocchi del Mantegna” – an educational game for the Ferrarese court

In the following catalogue you will find a timeline of 35 manuscript and printed books, compiled from the inventory of seven rare book dealers from five countries, spanning eight centuries of ideas, from 1255 to 1962.

1962

An extra-illustrated folio of woodcuts, all signed by Georges Braque

This selection seeks to recreate the spirit of camaraderie of the book fairs in which we, along with our peers, have always taken pleasure, and have sincerely missed the past few months. If you did not already know all our friends and colleagues whose works are represented, then we are delighted to introduce them to you.

1859

First edition of “certainly the most important biological book ever written”

We hope you will enjoy exploring this online exhibition dedicated to the art of the book: Amor Librorum nos unit.

The Clavreuil family opened their first antiquarian bookshop in 1901 with Charles Clavreuil, Stéphane’s great grand father. The Paris shop is located between the Sénat, Luxembourg garden and Odéon square, in the heart of Saint-Germain-des-Prés neighborhood, within the famous Quartier Latin.

Stéphane Clavreuil is the fourth generation of this famous family of antiquarian booksellers. After running the historical Paris shop at 19 rue de Tournon for over 30 years, Stéphane Clavreuil, expanded the company and opened Stéphane Clavreuil Rare Books Ltd in Berkeley Square, the heart of Mayfair and the historical neighborhood of the art market in London.

Thanks to his relentless pursuit to find rare books in France, Europe, and all over the world, Stéphane Clavreuil has been running one the leading antiquarian bookshops in the world, where curators and bookmen meet to find the items missing from their collections. Stéphane Clavreuil exhibits at most of the major international art fairs (TEFAF Maastricht, Frieze Masters London, and Fine Art Paris).

For the past twenty years the business has been run by Pom Harrington, Peter’s son.

We deal in books on all subjects from the 15th century to the present day. Our principal specialities include literature, economics, politics, and philosophy, travel, navigation, military history, science and medicine, children's books, and fine library sets.

Peter Harrington’s flagship shop occupies a double-fronted building at 100 Fulham Road, London, with more than 20,000 volumes and 6,000 works on paper displayed over four floors. Our Dover Street location in the West End of London offers a carefully curated selection of our best stock in a gallery-style environment at a location that is convenient for many of our clients.

As respected authorities in their fields, our team of literature and rare books specialists are regularly called upon to advise individual and institutional collectors around the world seeking to enhance their collections and build specialist libraries on niche topics ranging from everything from jazz, climate change and feminism, to early travel literature and landmark economic and philosophical works.

Since 1978, we have specialized in science, medicine, natural history, bibliography and the history of art and book collecting, and early printed books. Over the years we have issued more than 200 catalogues devoted to these subjects. My wife, Megumi Kaneko Hill, and I work together in our business. Our older son, Yoshi, joined our firm in May 2016.

Many famous books have passed through our hands, including first editions of Copernicus, Vesalius, Galileo, Harvey, Newton, Hokusai, Utamaro, and Darwin. We also specialize in important manuscripts related to the history of science, technology, and medicine as well as illuminated manuscripts. We work closely with private collectors, museums, and libraries, selling them books from our stock.

For the past 20 years, we have also specialized in antiquarian Japanese and Chinese illustrated books, manuscripts, and scrolls. Megumi, a graduate of Rikkyo University in Tokyo with a major in early Japanese literature, and Yoshi concentrate in this field.

The Libreria Pregliasco was established in Turin in 1911 when, following an innate passion for books, the young Lorenzo, Umberto’s grand-father, acquired a dusty second-hand bookshop near Piazza Vittorio Veneto. After he returned from ww1, he then published the first catalogue in 1921. Since then, the bookshop has been editing about 300 price lists, brochures and monographic catalogues, highlighting the importance of the text and the author in the cultural context of the period.

Lorenzo’s son, Arturo Pregliasco entered the book-trade early in the Fifties. He gave the company a more international scope and developed its business. In 1961, he moved the bookshop to the present premises in front of the Fine Arts Academy of Turin. He has been active, and very passionate, for more than fifty years: around 1985 his son Umberto started to help him.

I must say that I found perfectly natural to continue the family businness under the banner of the tradition, together with an obvious cultural and technological renewal, looking after the auctions, the bookfairs and the Internet. After more than a century of history, and recently after months spent refurbishing the location and sorting thousands of books, the staff of the Libreria Pregliasco receives now the collectors straight on the first floor, in a modern open-space where the old furniture meets the new: the antique bookcases leave a new life facing some new pieces of design of the past century. But the same “historical” address remains for more than 60 years.
